Are you an artist in the Tampa Bay area who wants to meet and discuss the work of other local artists? Are your artistic intentions the same as what is perceived in your work? Are you looking for ideas about how your work can improve? Join us for the TMA TMI Virtual Crit Group, a monthly series of virtual group critiques presented by the Tampa Museum of Art over Zoom.

As a group of artists we will spend each session of TMA TMI looking at and discussing works of art from each participant. Discussions will focus on our observations and interpretations of each other’s work, and what we all think is working in each piece. There is also time for viewers to ask questions of the exhibiting artist, as well as time for the artist to direct the discussion and solicit constructive comments about aspects of their work that could benefit from a different approach in technique or thought.

DON’T BE NERVOUS! This is a positive and supportive meetup of emerging, mid-career, and later-career artists, practicing active and imaginative looking, leading to objective description and analysis backed up by things we are seeing. We will not criticize your drawing ability or choice of subject. What we will do is focus our attention on works of art for usually around 20 minutes per artwork, describing, analyzing, and discussing what we are seeing. As an artist you will be engaging with the work and ideas of other local artists, and will receive valuable takeaways from hearing how other artists see and interpret your work.

For each session, artists are asked to prepare photos of 1-2 recent, finished works of art. To help those who have never experienced a group critique, or if it’s been a while since you participated in one, participants will also be emailed a printable handout of possible questions that you can apply to any work of art we discuss this week. The conversation will be moderated by artist and Tampa Museum of Art Studio Programs Coordinator Anthony Record.

You can prepare as many photos of details as you wish, but be sure to have one high quality photo of the overall piece as the main photo. Participants will show their work by sharing their screen.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. All media are welcome and encouraged.
